It is easily recognized by the 8 bolt pattern intake manifold as compared to the pre-1996 with a 12 bolt pattern intake manifold. The 1996 & up 4.3L engines must also use an electric fuel pump. The 4.3L engine is offered with and without an intake manifold. The engine with the manifold is available with a 4 BBL or a 2 BBL intake and also includes the water pump.
